Tips to Advance in Your Career

Posted On By Laura

No matter how long you have been with your company or in your position, it’s important to always be thinking about your future in the company and how you can advance your career. Whether you have just started out in the company and are always the one having to make coffee runs or you are the second in command, taking control of your career is important and vital to your success. No matter how busy you are or how tired you are in the evening, it’s important to stay focused and keep your career on track.

Join a Professional Association

Many people don’t take the time to join associations related to their careers but they are one of the most important tools that you can use to better yourself. Joining the group and going to meetings will allow you to meet professionals in your area who are in your industry. You may have the opportunity for continuing education as well as the chance to meet top professionals. If you are able to find the time to volunteer on the association board, you will be able to meet all of your fellow members and explore new career opportunities.

Stay Educated

While you may have thought that you were done with classes when you graduated college, taking a business management course will help you to stay focused on your goals while also allowing you to hone your management skills. Some people believe that good managers are made through experience but that’s not always true. You have to have the knowledge to be able to do the job and taking business courses will set you apart from your peers in the company.

Find a Mentor

Not everyone is comfortable asking someone to be his or her professional mentor but having a mentor is the best way to learn the ins and outs of your company and how to improve your career without making all of the mistakes that your mentor did. Before approaching someone about being your mentor, you will need to define the relationship and know what you want to get out of it. It’s important that the mentor understands why you have chosen him or her to mentor you and is willing to take the time to meet with you; otherwise, this relationship will not work.

Keep an Eye on Your Resume

Even if you are thrilled to work at your current company, you need to keep your resume updated. Having a resume that you can hand over to your manager or to the boss of the company at a moment’s notice will set you apart from your coworkers. Make sure that you include on it any professional organisations that you have joined, volunteer work that you do, and extra business classes that you are taking. This is the place to shine so be sure that it’s always uptodate.

Advancing in your career is a lot easier than you may think when you follow these tips. Keep learning; eventually, your hard work and education will pay off.
